About the Event
The EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) has entered a new phase. Following the expiry of the final transitional arrangements for crypto-asset service providers in July 2026, attention is shifting from the establishment of a common regulatory framework to its practical implementation, supervisory convergence and potential adjustments. The European Commission's review of MiCA, launched in May 2026, provides an opportunity to assess whether the framework is delivering on its objectives and remains fit for purpose in a rapidly evolving crypto-asset market.
The review comes at a time when new regulatory challenges are emerging. The European Banking Authority's September 2026 recommendations have brought renewed attention to stablecoin multi-issuance arrangements, regulatory definitions, crypto-asset lending and supervisory reporting. At the same time, questions remain about the effectiveness of MiCA's authorisation and passporting framework, the consistency of national supervisory approaches and the ability of European crypto-asset markets to compete internationally. The challenge for policymakers is to strike the right balance between financial stability, investor protection, innovation and competitiveness.
For Central and Eastern Europe, these developments carry particular significance. MiCA creates opportunities for crypto-asset firms to operate across the EU under a harmonised regulatory framework, potentially supporting market development and cross-border expansion. However, implementation also raises challenges for smaller financial markets, including licensing requirements, supervisory capacity, regulatory costs and the ability of regional fintech companies to compete in an increasingly integrated European market. The experience of national supervisors and market participants will be important in assessing whether MiCA is delivering a genuinely level playing field.
Taking place as discussions on the future of MiCA gain momentum, this CEE Perspective Academy webinar will bring together representatives from the European Commission, national supervisors, the financial services industry and regulatory experts to examine the lessons from MiCA's implementation and the priorities for its review. The discussion will explore emerging challenges around stablecoins, the practical experience of firms and supervisors, and the implications for innovation, market access and competitiveness across Central and Eastern Europe. Looking ahead to 2027, the webinar will consider what regulatory changes may be needed and what the next phase of MiCA could mean for Europe's evolving crypto-asset markets.
